EtihadWE and Partners Announce Ambitious Sustainability Projects at WFES 2025

Abu Dhabi: The World Future Energy Summit (WFES) saw Etihad Water and Electricity (EtihadWE), in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MoEI), RAK Municipality, and RAK Public Services Department, unveiling a series of sustainability initiatives at a joint press conference.

According to Emirates News Agency, these initiatives align with the resolutions of H.H. Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, focused on advancing sustainability in the emirate. The strategy aims to reduce electricity, water, and transportation fuel consumption with targets set at a 30% reduction in electricity usage and a 20% decrease in both water and fuel consumption by 2030.

EtihadWE and its partners have replaced around 42 kilometers of old pipelines with advanced technology, utilizing SmartBall and acoustic inspection tools. Additionally, over 213,000 Advanced Metering Infrastructure smart meters for electricity and water have been installed to improve resource management and align with sustainability goals.

The initiative also includes expanding the electric vehicle infrastructure, with plans to install over 120 fast chargers in Ras Al Khaimah in the next five years, and approximately 1,000 chargers across the UAE by 2030.

Yousif Ahmed Al Ali, CEO of EtihadWE, highlighted the shared commitment to sustainability, emphasizing the support from MoEI and other Ras Al Khaimah entities in achieving the sustainability vision set by H.H. Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi. He stated that these efforts contribute to economic growth and community well-being, positioning the emirate as a leader in sustainable development.

The initiatives also involve investments of AED465 million for water network rehabilitation in the Northern Emirates and AED214 million specifically for Ras Al Khaimah. More than AED180 million has been invested in the smart meter project in the emirate, along with provisions for installing 120 electric vehicle chargers over the next five years.

Mozah Al Nuaimi, Director of Productivity and Demand Management Department at MoEI, emphasized the UAE’s commitment to integrating sustainability and reducing its carbon footprint, aiming for net zero by 2050. The initiatives are part of the National Water and Energy Demand Side Management Program targeting significant reductions in resource consumption by 2050.

Andrea Di Gregorio, Executive Director of Energy Efficiency and Renewables Office (Reem) in Ras Al Khaimah Municipality, noted the government’s renewed commitment to energy efficiency, with specific reduction targets set for 2030.

Raed Hills, Director-Strategy and Development at the Public Service Department, discussed strategic initiatives for optimizing resource management, achieving ISO 50001 certification, and promoting responsible resource use.

Etihad Water and Electricity showcased several projects at WFES, including the UAEV project, the Distributed Solar System initiative, the Naqa’a Desalination Plant, and the Al Khuraijah Water Distribution Centre, aligned with the summit’s theme.
